Caitanya Caritamrta of Krsnadasa Kaviraja: A Translation and Commentary (Harvard Oriental Series, 56.)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (October, 2000)
Authors: Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami, Edward C. Dimock, Tony Kevin Stewart, and Krsnadasa
Average review score:

A Treasure
In a crowning achievement to a long and illustrious career, Prof. Dimock has provided us with a wonderful new version of this essential text. For a long time the most available version of CC has been the Hare Krsna (ISKCON) 17 volume set. It is a relief to have this careful, brilliantly done and very readable version in one volume without the eccentric "purports" of the Hare Krsna version. Although a hefty academic text, this book is quite an easy read. Cannot be too highly recommended.

Scholarly Translation of a Seminal Religious Text
Dimock and Stewart's translation of the Caitanya Caritamrta (The Nectar of the Acts of Caitanya) is a readable and extremely well-researched edition of the biography of Sri Caitanya, a 16th century Bengali ascetic who is believed by Gaudiya Vaisnavas to have been the androgynous dual incarnation of Krsna and Radha. The lengthy introduction and notes on translation provide readers unfamiliar with the tradition with all the background they need to appreciate the layers of meaning hidden in the text and the narrative strategies of Krsnadasa that come across so well in this translation. For more background, read Dimock's 1966 book, "The Place of the Hidden Moon". a true classic in the literature of South Asian studies. Highly recommended.

The Call of God
Published in Paperback by Pneuma Life Publishing (February, 1996)
Author: Jefferson Edwards
Average review score:

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO HAS HEARD THE CALL OF GOD
I cannot encourage pastors, ministers, and laity alike who have heard and answered the call of God for their life to read this book. In it you will find wisdom for what God has intended for your life. Many don't understand that the depth and breadth of the call comes once you answer it. But on the way to "being" what God has called you to be, He must prepare you "to do" what it is He's called you to do. If you have ever had questions about the process and timing (the swiftness or delay) of fulfilling your call, or think you are ready to "run" with the call upon your life, you should read this book. Every church should use this text as a tool to equip saints for the work of the ministry.

A must have for new ministers.
This book should be highly recommended from every pastor that has a newly called minister on his staff. Jefferson Edwards shares five very important points with the new minister. 1. What is involved in the call of God 2. The processing of the called 3. The New Testament process in relation to the Old Testament process 4. The priesthood-God's first orders of ministry 5. The call to his glory and anointing

I know this will be a blessing to any minister!

Bless Your Spirit Rev. Matt Yarbrough, Jr.

Reference Title
The information in this volume is somewhat dated, but it remains a rich reference source.

Tried, Tested and True
This book even though a little startling at first. Brings to light some very hidden truths. These truths have been hidden from knowledge. The Bible states that "we shall know the truth, and the truth shall set us free". We need truth in a world full of uncertainties and lies. Truth brings knowledge. It is our Plumbline to measure everything with. We need this to survive. Life is empty in uncertainties. We know where we are going in truth and where we have come from! This book reveals - lays open, it is bare! Thanks for all the arduous research but it was well worth it. Thanks and well done.

Catastrophe of Coma: A Way Back
Published in Paperback by Sheridan House (July, 1900)
Authors: Edward Alan Freeman and Henry Stonnington
Average review score:

A supportive, constructive, nurturing how-to-deal book
The author assumes right off that if you are reading this book, you have suffered an enormous tragedy in your life and he sets right out to help you deal with it. He explains medical terminology and hospital politics in a non-threatening and very practical way. He tells you what you CAN do and what you CAN'T do. And he gives you very constructive instructions about how to do the things that you can do. It is a nurturing AND realistic book that makes the process much more concrete and while it can't take the pain away, it does a wonderful job of lifting all the burden from your shoulders.

Professional and personal reviews give thumbs up for book
Professional and personal opinions of this book give the "thumbs up" as a practical reference for rehabilitation.

Mr Neil Brooks, Wellcome Neuroscience Group, University of Glasgow wrote this book has obviously been draughted for families of brain injury.

"It is a clearly written book with some excellent illustrations. It is a book which gives hope," Mr Brooks wrote in his review for the journal Brain Injury, 1989, Vol 3, No 1. "I would recommend this book to any family member of a brain-injured person, as well as those who are interested in the practice of coma stimulation," he concluded.

Dr Keith Andrews, Director of Medical and Research Services, Royal Hospital & Home, London reviewed Dr Freeman's book for the Autumn edition of Clinical Rehabilitation, 1989.

Dr Andrews wrote the book was extremely good and mused many hospitals will soon be under pressure, unable to live up to the proposals for rehabilitation which Dr Freeman addresses in his book.

Dr Clarke, Director of the British Life Insurance Trust for Health Education, London, wrote with praise and a practical proposal for the book in 1988. "It is a really excellent book. We are a registered charity ... and we have been raising money to distribute free of charge Coma Stimulation Kits to hospitals that request them. Dr Clarke proposed the inclusion of Dr Freeman's book in the kits.

Finally, a personal review from Ms Jeanette Moss, Director, The New South Wales Council for Intellectual Disability, Australia. She wrote: "I have spent many hours reading your book and then going back and rereading whole chapters."

Ms Moss further explained her opinion of the book, from her own experiences of brain injury. "The empathy I feel and the memories I will continue to hold close, come from that thread of 'close touching' which flows through every chapter. Not always the physical 'touching'; but the 'touching' from someone who cares and understands; a someone who understands how a family feels, who walks with them through their despair and confusion, through the inadequate crumbs of medical advice, through their frustrations at the coninuing lack of information; how to understand what is happening now, what to do next, what to aim for and look for in the future.

"I so wish your book had been around twenty five years ago when I was a confused and struggling young parent with a son whose intellect was impaired, lacking any of the supports which a parent looks to the medical and rehabilitative services to provide. If that 'close touching' of constructive and informed concern had been around then, what a difference it would have made to one family's future.

"For all families who have a loved one suffering brain injury, your words are a lifeline. For all families with a loved member of the family faced with other disabilities, what you have written can only be encouraging ... your book is a reinforcement of what love and encouragement can achieve."

"Many families continue to struggle with the reluctance or inability of the various professions to provide us with the information we need, given to us in an understandable and deliberate and compassionate way. I hope and trust your book will fall into the hands of every famnily and friend of aa person who is brain injured, and into the wider readership of families of people who are intellectually or physically disabled."

Cato Handbook for Congress: Policy Recommendations for the 108th Congress
Published in Paperback by Cato Inst (February, 2003)
Authors: Cato Institute, Edward H. Crane, and David Boaz
Average review score:

An essential political survey of issues
This is the fifth handbook for new Congress which raises issues likely to be major agenda items for decades; form tax cuts and public health program reforms to creating policies for returning the federal government to a healthier size and scope. Included is an update on terrorism initiatives and their threats to civil liberties. The Cato Handbook For Congress is an essential political survey of issues which are certain not to become quickly dated.

Well Thought Out
A logical, concise, and thorough analysis of issues no body wants to discuss. The topics are well presented one by one within the context of the threats to the American way of life as prescribed by the US Constitution. It seems that we have lost our way and this book is a road map to set us back on course. Major topics include: Terrorism, Government Reform, Civil Liberties, Money and Banking, Domestic Policy, Regulation, Energy & Environment, Foreign & Domestic Policy, International Economic Policy. The Cato Institute is addressing the issues here that every congressional representative, senator, and the president are afraid to address because US politics is not about doing what is right, but who can steal the most.

As a libertarian I am sickened by the current state of the state. Federalism is dead, boondoggle's are a dime a dozen, the government rapes me every paycheck, social security is a pyramid scam that allows only a select few early participates tremendous return, the world cop (US) is hated by all nations and yet it costs us billions to protect these whiney countries, government jobs are just an extended welfare program, corporate welfare is offensive, environmental laws favor deep pockets, etc. This excellent book does more then just identify the problems. It suggests logical remedies to the many problems the government has created. The writers not only balance the budget, but they cut $309 Billion in chapter 23 --every I agree with every cut. I have sent a copy of this book to both my congressional and senatorial representative with a note that this is my desired action plan. I challenge every American that loves this country and wants the insanity to stop to do the same.

Change Your Life with Martial Arts
Published in Paperback by Blueberry Press (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Linda Davis Kyle, Guy Lancaster, Mindy Reed, Edward J. Jackowski, and Jerry L. Beasley
Average review score:

Self-improvement through learning self-defense
Written by health, fitness, and martial arts expert Linda Davis Kyle as a straightforward introduction to self-improvement through learning self-defense, Change Your Life With Martial Arts is a very thoroughly "reader friendly" guide to how martial arts can be employed to enhance daily life. This superbly presented, step-by-step instructional guide to finding the best martial arts school for oneself and one's family, how to guard against overtraining, and so much more, Change Your Life With Martial Arts is commended for providing a basic overview which is especially suited for newcomers to the exciting, physically and emotionally enhancing world of the martial arts.

Essetial Introduction to the Martial Arts
An Essential Introduction to the Martial Arts
Reviewer: Billie A. Williams from Bayfield, CO, United States
The wealth of information in Change Your Life with Martial Arts is sure to guide readers in choosing a martial art most suited to them.

In chapter one, author Linda Davis Kyle highlights a generous sampling from the vast array of martial arts and their founders or grandmasters, gives tidbits of the origins of the arts and how they may relate to each other, and annotates the references for each. She also summarizes the goals of a selection of the various martial arts and the qualities that each attempts to instill in their dedicated practitioners.

In chapter two, the author tells the benefits and rewards of martial arts no matter which one you choose. She says that "The martial arts nurture a fine balance of body and mind that helps to create physical endurance and mental ruggedness" and stresses that the aggression and violence sometimes portrayed in martial arts movies veers far from the traditions of being humble, honorable, respectful, responsible, and ethical, which are the true goals of martial arts practitioners.

In chapter three, Kyle takes readers through the process of selecting a teacher and suggests qualities to look for in the instructor and the school itself.

With appendixes that glimpse into the topics of overtraining and the impact of exercise on children and a list of directories, federations, institutions, and organizations associated with the various martial arts and suppliers of equipment, Kyle has prepared a user-friendly manual to help interested learners to get onto the right track to begin the study and practice of these ancient arts. The book also may serve more advanced martial artists by placing at their fingertips more than 70 other useful resources.
This book is not only for those looking to begin training in one of the martial arts for better physical and mental health, but also I would highly recommend Change Your Life with Martial Arts to those seeking a higher consciousness and inner peace, for as the author says, "The influence of martial arts overflows into every aspect of the practitioner's life."

Changing Directions Without Losing Your Way : Manging the Six Stages of Change at Work and in Life
Published in Audio Cassette by Simon & Schuster (June, 2001)
Authors: Paul Edwards and Sarah Edwards
Average review score:

Forget Moving The Cheese. This Is Your Life
About 30 years ago I read Alvin Toffler's FUTURE SHOCK wherein he described the rapidity of change and impact it would have on society and the individual in the coming decades. I have since observed in my personal and professional lives much of that dispossessing "shock" where the future meets the present. I could well have remained immobilized in the wake of recent life path switcheroos but for the wholly manageable techniques laid out in Paul and Sarah Edwards CHANGING DIRECTIONS. Clearly they have done their homework and have fashioned a plan of action that anyone can commence and complete, regardless of how stranded one may feel or uncertain the road may look. The book's life lessons allow individuals to reset the compass, fuel the engine, align the steering, inflate the tires and provide some fresh views of roads taken or not taken. Last year's WHO MOVED MY CHEESE provided a nice little fable and easy read for time-strapped rat-racers. But it might leave many feeling a bit undernourished in the how-to department. Paul and Sarah Edwards have set the table nicely with a six-course feast ("to go") of work and life-changing wisdom. Just desserts await those who faithfully follow their recommended menus.

Well worth the read...
I found the book to be extremely helpful in identifying what it is you wish to change in your life, eliminating the fear and psychological blocks which stand in the way, and manifesting the dreams you've always had...yet often forgot were still locked inside, waiting to be fulfilled. The authors have written in a way which is immediately accessible, entertaining, and easily digested. There is a gentle urging which draws you closer to those "fantasies" many of us let go of, only to replace with a half-life of others' belief systems that ultimately have not led to our fulfillment. "Changing Directions" gets you in touch with what you may have forgotten or forever released as "inappropriate" or "irresponsible choices"...and challenges you to once again embrace them as perhaps the only appropriate, responsible choice you can make if you are ever to achieve happiness.

Chaos in Dynamical Systems
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (July, 1993)
Author: Edward Ott
Average review score:

Good for physicists
A good introduction to chaos in dynamical systems for physicists. The emphasis is not on time-series analysis or nonlinear systems, but chaos in "physical" systems (in the sense of applications in physics). A good reading for undergrads in physics and maths. One of the best starters for getting deeper into chaos theory...

Destined to become the standard text of the field
An excellent text that is written in a very understandable and careful style. It gives the readers a good grasp of the fundamentals by emphasizing main ideas instead of harping on technical definitions. The bibliography at the end of the book is also a good source for readers who want to delve further into the technical literature.
